UKRAINE-NATIONAL-OLYMPIC-COMMITTEE-RESIGNATION

Kyiv, June 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine has accepted the resignation of Secretary General of the NOC Volodymyr Heraschenko and expelled him from the NOC for breaching his membership commitments.

A relevant decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting of the General Assembly of the National Olympic Committee on Friday.

In addition, the meeting condemned Heraschenko’s behavior, saying that he “was guilty of unethical conduct and violated fundamental Olympic principles, as defined in the preamble to the Olympic Charter.”

In turn, President of the National Olympic Committee Serhiy Bubka said that the International Olympic Committee was also investigating this incident.

Earlier, the media carried a story claiming that Heraschenko had a meeting at a London hotel with a reporter who was posing as a ticket scalper, and told the journalist that his duties included distributing tickets among Ukrainian fans, coaches and officials, but that he needed to stash about 100 tickets away for sale on the black market.

Heraschenko denied later that he had ever had any plans to sell tickets in Britain.

In late May, Heraschenko resigned from the position of secretary general at the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.

On June 20 the commission investigating the incident said that Heraschenko had had no right to discuss the sale of tickets to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and that he was drunk during the conversation.
