BYT-Batkivschyna asks Yanukovych not to delay consideration of Tymoshenko’s cassation appeal against gas case verdict

UKRAINE-BYT-PRESIDENT-TYMOSHENKO

Kyiv, June 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The BYT-Batkivschyna faction in parliament has asked Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych not to delay the consideration of a cassation appeal lodged by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her defense team against the gas case verdict.

“The faction is asking the Ukrainian president, as the guarantor of the Constitution, to make every effort to ensure the Higher Specialized Court considers a cassation appeal on June 26 this year in accordance with Ukrainian legislation,” faction leader Andriy Kozhemiakin said at a meeting of the conciliatory council of the leaders of parliamentary factions and committees in Kyiv on Monday.

In his opinion, delaying the consideration of the cassation appeal will indicate that the entire judicial system in Ukraine is “under the manual control of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.”

Tymoshenko was sentenced by Kyiv’s Pechersky District Court to seven years in prison on charges of abuse of office, while signing gas contracts with Russia in 2009. The Ukrainian Court of Appeals upheld the verdict. The ex-premier is serving her sentence in the Kachanivska women’s penal colony in Kharkiv.
