Ukraine lawmaker raps EU legislators over Tymoshenko’s treatment

UKRAINE-TYMOSHENKO-TREATMENT-OPINION

Kyiv, June 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A senior Ukrainian lawmaker rapped two members of the European Parliament on Thursday for a statement on the current medical treatment of former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is serving a seven-year jail term on an abuse of office charge.

“We highly value the desire of our German friends to help Yulia Volodymyrivna [Tymoshenko] recover as quickly as possible. I’m sure that they sincerely wish wellbeing and health to the former prime minister of Ukraine. However, I would refrain from recommendations about Ms. Tymoshenko’s treatment,” a statement from the ruling Party of Regions quoted Viktor Korzh, deputy chairman of parliament’s Health Care Committee, as saying.

Korzh’s comments targeted Rebecca Harms and Werner Schulz, German members of the European Parliament.

“As far as I know, Frau Harms is a designer by training and Herr Schulz is a specialist on food processing technology. I can’t even imagine what they would think of suggestions about their professional work from, say, a test pilot,” Korzh said.

“One has the impression that our German colleagues have solved all their internal problems and that now Tymoshenko’s future is their number one concern,” he said.

He claimed that the clinic that the Ukrainian government has chosen for treating Tymoshenko meets all necessary medical standards. “This has, by the way, been admitted by doctors from the German clinic Charite, who appreciated the efforts of the Ukrainian government to provide the convict with conditions as comfortable as possible,” Korzh said.
