Kyiv, December 12 (Ukraine News) – Ukrainian parliament is intended to increase the age for marriage for women from 17 to 18.

Two hundred and twenty-six MPs of the 302 registered in parliament voted for the first reading of the draft law on amendments into the Family Code of Ukraine on increasing the minimum age for marriage.

The draft law proposes to set the same minimum age for marriage for women as for men, at 18 years.

According to the present law, women may get married at 17 and men at 18.

The draft law also stipulates that the person who is 16 may get married if it is established by a court that the marriage is in their interests. Under existing legislation the age is 14 years.
