Russia suggests moving 2011 world figure skating championships in Moscow

Moscow, March 17 (Ukraine General News) – Russia has proposed to move the 2011 world figure skating championships from quake-stricken Japan to Moscow.

“Our ministry has already filed an official bid with the International Skating Union for holding the world figure skating championships in Moscow instead of Tokyo where it was due to take place from March 21 to 27. It’s clear to everyone that it cannot be held in Japan under the current conditions,” a source in the Russian Sports and Tourism Ministry’s press service told Interfax on Thursday.

The death toll from Japan’s earthquake and tsunami currently stands at 5,400, 9,500 people are missing and about 2,400 sustained injuries, according to the figures released by the National Police Agency on Thursday.
